Samba 2.0.6: protocol negotiation failed

Hello,

I am running Samba 2.0.6 on a RedHat 6.2 computer. The Samba server is
configured to validate the password on a Windows NT server with the
"security=server" and "password server = <SERVER1 SERVER2 SERVER3>"
directives. The Samba server worked well for quite a long time but this
morning, the Samba server refuses to work.

When I did my troubleshooting sequence, the command "smbclient -L <SAMBA
SERVER>" gave me the following error message:

    protocol negotiation failed

What does this error message mean ? Does it mean the Windows NT server
has changed ? Upgraded ? or the Samba server was doing bad ? I changed
the Samba server config file to validate the paswords locally and the
system came back to work. I changed back the Samba server config file to
validate passwords remotely but with a different sequence of Windows NT
servers (i.e.: "password server = <SERVER2> <SERVER3> <SERVER1>") and
the Samba server came back to work. Can somebody explain me this
behavior ?

Thanks a lot,

Claude.
