Ah...but the smbpasswd file has no password set in it.
the mksmbpasswd.sh script only creates the user 
template entries.

Did you reboot afterwards?

Set these in smb.conf

	encrypt passwords = no

Also see the password level parameter in the 
smb.conf(5) man page.

After you do that, if you still have problems, let me know.
