local users required when using domain authentication?

Hi all,

I'm using Samba-2.0.7 on Solaris 7, as a domain member, in a domain
controlled by a Samba-2.2.0alpha0/Linux PDC. The Solaris box serves just a
single share, not homes. I'd like this share to be available to every user
who is authenticated by the domain. Joining the domain works fine.

I have the share defined as follows:

[temp]
   comment = testshare
   path = /mnt/tmp
   writable = yes
   public = yes

The question is, do I need to have local users defined on the Solaris box
to match the domain users? According to DOMAIN_MEMBER.txt, there will in
the future be support for this (`appliance mode'?). Under the setup above,
I don't need to define local users, and despite the `public=yes', users
must be authenticated by the domain to gain access.

However, I've tried to replicate this setup with an NT4 PDC and a Solaris
8 box running Samba-2.0.7. The Solaris box will allow domain-authenticated
users to list the shares, but not to connect to a share, /unless/ that
user exists as a local user.

Any ideas?

Chris.
