Windows ME and printers

I have 30 shared printers configured on a central samba print server. The
printer server farms out the jobs via lpd. The problem is that under
windows ME all the printers are "offline" I can see them and map them but
not user them. Under Windows 95/98 and NT 4 I have no problems at all. 

Am I missing something ovious? I have searched the net for info but
nothing useful came back, and I have tinkered with the smb.conf for a
while to no notical effect.
