Also, we are incrementally backing up a partition containing a Microsoft
"Source Safe" project. Every time we compile a new version it creaes
about 900Mb of intermediate files with various file extensions,
which we would rather not back up.

I couldn't find a way to add multiple "X" (exclude) options
to the "-T" (tar) options. I think I may need to recompile
with HAVE_REGEX_H and use a "proper" regular expression.
