smbpasswd dissappeared

Today I came in to find the smbpasswd file was totally empty. What could
have happened to cause its size to go to 0? If anyone knows what could
have caused this I would appreciate an explaination. Of course I had
some concerned users this morning who could not log in. I just switched
to using sbpasswd for login last week and would like to continue with
this scheme. We are running  samba 2.0.3 with RH Linux 5.1. Any known
bugs in this area?
