Can't write to shares

I have been trying to figure out this problem for weeks.
I have samba running as "security=user" on a network with two other
machines, one nt workstation and one win9x. I eventually want to use samba
as a domain controller but for now it is just file storage. From either of
the two machines, I can mount shares and list files and directories in the
root directory only, but I cannot read/copy or write any files. I have
checked to see if I have the unix and samba users synced and checked the
permissions. I'm new to unix permissions but I think I have the hang of it.
I am running this on SuSE 6.2 and samba 2.0.6. Thanks in advance for your
help.
