SAMBA installation problems

If I remember correctly, tardist is the format used by the SGI `inst'
program.  Try pointing `inst' at the directory containing the
distribution file, see it it picks it up.

I very much doubt the packaged version comes with a `smb.conf' file you 
will be happy with.  Find it and edit it to taste.
