I posted a bug report about a similar (maybe the same) issue:
when connecting with smbclient (1.9.18p10 or 2.0.x) to a samba share,
and doing "ls" the . and .. dir are not shown, whereas they are shown if
you connect with the same smbclient binaries to a win9x/winnt share.

I hope this will be solved in 2.0.7 and maybe you will be able to
retro-fit it to 1.9.18p10.
