Hehe smack me in the head :)  doh!   I didn't realize that Slackware 7.0
compiled the smbfs support as a module.  I did a modprobe smbfs, and
then smbmount //server/share /mnt/ptdir   <--- Bingo!  It worked.  :)
So I enabled the module in the /etc/rc.d/rc.modules file.
