Sure. They must have TCP installed and they must provide the full path to the
share (ie browsing doesn't work outside the local network since that operates
via broadcasting).
In other words, rather than clicking down in the Network Neighborhood you
should instead choose "map drive" and type in the name of the share (eg
"\\host.example.com\d").
I use this all the time to work across subnets or against UNIX hosts.
