Ah, looks like my mount *is* out of date.  Now that I've updated it from
Debian unstable, the problems seem to have gone away.

Is the problem a general one in mount, or only relating to smbmount?  If
the latter, I may file a bugreport with Debian: an update to the latest
smbmount ought to trigger (or at least suggest) an update to mount,
seems like.

By the way, was the list screwed up this weekend?  I already sent this
