Printer client communication?

I'm curious about something:

what kind of communication can the print server (running samba 2.0.6) have
with the print client? i mean, is there a way to do message passing back
and forth? confirmation dialog? or would that require writing an entirely
new printer client? (the "client" in this case is the standard Win9x
printer spooler).

i'm putting together a proposal for a rather large project and am trying
to cover all bases so any info is appreciated.
