A different Win98 password problem

I can not get a laptop to running Win98 to mount samba shares on a Linux
box, and I don't think it's the normal encrypted password problem.  Here's
the setup:

Linux box has a class B ethernet connection to the internet and a class C
connection to the laptop.

I have 

interfaces = 192.168.1.1/24 in smb.conf

I tried the registry patch.

I then switched to encrypted samba passwords on the linux box.

The win98 machine dual boots linux, and I can get smbclient connections to
the linuxbox then.  I have to use the smbpasswd password, not the regular
one, suggesting that encrypted passwords are working ok on the linuxbox.  

I can even mount the linuxbox as a network drive from the NT cluster
downstairs.

The win98 username matches that on the linuxbox.

When I try mapping network drives on the win98 machine as

\\linuxbox\username and enter the password (regular or encrypted)

I get "Microsoft Networking: The password is incorrect.  Try again."

with

use net \\linuxbox\tmp x:

I get "Error 86: The specified network password is not correct..."

I've also tried using \\192.168.1.1\tmp in case it's looking at 1.2.3.4
(i.e. the machines internet connection).  Don't know if that's valid.

The connection between the machines seems fine otherwise, I can mount
shares on the win98 machine on the linuxbox, the linuxbox is forwarding IP
for the win98 machine. etc. etc.

It's failing at step 8 of the diagnosing smb file, with that Error 86
password message, although I don't know how you set a password for "net
view".


Any suggestions gratefully received.
