Samba cannot create a SAM SID

I have a problem running Samba-2.0.6 on AIX4.2. I follow
the steps described in DOMAIN_MEMBER.txt and finaly
when i try to start smbd, i'm getting following errors:

[2000/02/07 11:12:59, 0] lib/util_sid.c:string_to_sid(262)
  string_to_sid: Sid  does not start with 'S-'.
[2000/02/07 11:12:59, 0] passdb/passdb.c:read_sid_from_file(812)
  unable to generate machine SID.
[2000/02/07 11:12:59, 0] passdb/passdb.c:pdb_generate_sam_sid(873)
  unable to read file /usr/local/samba/private/MACHINE.SID. Error was No
  such file or directory
[2000/02/07 11:12:59, 0] smbd/server.c:main(677)
  ERROR: Samba cannot create a SAM SID.

I'm confused, because MACHINE.SID exists:
/usr/local/samba/private> ls -la MACHINE.SID 
-rw-r--r--   1 root     system         0 Feb 07 10:49 MACHINE.SID
