Timeouts are fine, smbmount is supposed to reconnect automagically.

If this fails (as I suspect it does for you) then you may be using too old
versions of the various components (always include version numbers of
relavant software in any problem report).

Samba 2.0.7, Linux 2.2.18 should not suffer from connection loss
(well, it shouldn't be as bad as it was ... it's still possible to break
 things if you are clever). Try upgrading if you are not using those
 versions already.
