smbd processes spawned as user or root?

When users connect to our Samba servers, sometimes these smbd process
run as the user, but more often they end up running as root.  Smbstatus
shows the correct users associated with these root owned smbd process.

Why aren't all of the spawned smbd process run as the user who invoked
them?

Are there any security issues related to non-root users running smbd
processes as root or does Samba manage this?
