connections.tdb not initialised in 2.2.alpha1

I'm not sure if 2.2.x still uses a STATUS..LCK but this looks pretty 
much like a 2.0.x lock directory. Please don't get me wrong: are you 
absolutely sure you are running a 2.2.x? What does log.smbd tell you? 
Do you have a "server string" with %v in your s,b.conf? What does 
Net'hood in detailed view tell you about your server?
