As much as I love Samba, OpenSores, Linux and apple pie, setting Samba as
an
NT domain controller used to be a bit of a hack that required a lot of shoe
horning, and a lot of reading, and experimentation.
Get the books, sign up for the support email list and be prepared for a
bumpy ride.
The problem is that certain things *should* work a certain way, but such is
not always the case and you may do everything by the book and it doesn't
work as expected.
If the Samba code has been fixed, then maybe it's been upgraded to set it
up
easier - that's the biggest hassle.
Other than setup, everything I've read is that it works great. I have been
using Samba servers as NT replacements since about 1993 and I think that it
is one of the Linux solutions' greatest strengths. It's just the config
that
sucks.
Hopefully it's better than it was.

I'm a Unix bigot, so I tend to reccomend making the
Windows clients member of an ordinary Unix-style
domain using Samba as a combined authentication, print and
file server, and managing the samba server as just
another server in a vax-free vaxcluster of servers (;-))
Windows domains are cool, but they start you down the
path to many individual servers and many many windows admins.
[We used to have 5 Win and OS/2 SMB servers: I replaced
them with one Unix box when the PC guy quit due to overwork]

It really was a network problem: the client
failed, disconencted and marked the shares
as doubtfull. When the user browsed them
again, it reconnected.
Suspect bad hubs, eternet settings (full/half duplex,
for example) or too much broadcast traffic.

I bought the Using Samba book from O'Reilly and read it and Samba is the
easiest thing in the world to use now. I highly recommend this book and so
does
the Samba team (the text is now included with the Samba source).
I have setup a NT Domain Controller at home for my windows NT testing
network
and it works very well on my 486.

Hello all,
I recieve this error trying to build samba 2.0.7 on Redhat 6.2 with kernel
2.2.16 and gcc 2.91.66:

ERROR: No locking available. Running Samba would be unsafe
configure: error: summary failure. Aborting config
The error happens during the configure and won't let me even try to build
the binaries.
Any ideas?
