Is there any way to avoid using gcc 2.8.1?  I really hate to say that a
compiler bug would cause memory leaks, but I seem to recall that gcc
2.8 on Solaris is supposed to be a rather poor combination.

gcc 2.95.2 has been out for awhile; try upgrading to that, if you can,
and recompile Samba.  It may not help but it almost certainly won't
hurt.
