SMBD Start error on Irix 6.5.6

I'm getting the following error in my log.smb file when I try to start the
smbd and nmbd daemons under Irix 6.5.6:

ERROR: smbd : fcntl lock of file /usr/local/samba/var/locks/smbd.pid failed.
Error was No locks available

Any clues as to what this means, and a possible fix?
