Password problems with Samba on Alpha system

We have tried a couple of versions of Samba on an DEC Alpha running Tru64.
Most users can use this perfectly but a few get rejected at the password
authentication, and get logged on as guest users.

Machine is running NIS, and Makefile was generated automatically.

Win98 and Win2000 machines have had the "plain text password" patch to the
registry. Problem seems to lie on the server as other users can connect
from same PC as rejected users.

Have tried a lot of tweaking the config file, without success.

Possible relevant parts are appended

Thanks in advance for any advice.

# This option is important for security. It allows you to restrict
# connections to machines which are on your local network. The
