Samba + Win98: please help

Hello!

Please, help with the following problem!

I have installed samba 2.0.6 under Debian GNU/Linux. I have Win98 client with 
small hard disk. I tried to install different application on samba network 
disk. But many applications (MS Office, Corel DRAW, Netscape) crashes when 
installed on this network disk ("This program performed illegal operation...).
Sometimes installers crash too.
When I install these applications on hard disk on the client, then the
applications works properly. When I copy applications files to samba network
disk the applications continue to work properly. 

Why I cannot install applications on network disk "directly"?
