yes, the IPC$ share is for "interprocess communication". In reality it's a share used for anything that doesn't fit into a file or printer category. That includes browsing, domain logins etc. It is also used extensively for printing by MS clients. the best description available online is probably cifsrap2.txt in pub/samba/specs/ on a samba.org mirror.
