oplock.c error

I have recently set up Samba on a Compaq Proliant 1600, using Debian Linux
2.1 (slink) and kernel 2.2.11. I have compiled the kernel myself, and
patched it to support the compaq RAID controller. I have installed samba
from the Debian package of Samba 2.0.5a-2. The machine is running well, but
I cannot connect using SMB clients. When I try to connect, I get this
message in the log:

[1999/10/06 14:56:32, 0] smbd/oplock.c:open_oplock_ipc(92)
open_oplock_ipc: Failed to get local UDP socket for address 100007f. Error
was
 Cannot assign requested address

I have found a scattering of reports of this problem, but no solutions.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Steve Roylance
