problems running samba on Caldera 2.3?

smbclient -L HOSTNAME -U%
gives me:
added interface ip=192.168.0.1 bcast=192.168.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
session request to HOSTNAME failed
session request to *SMBSERVER failed

testparm shows no errors in my smb.conf file...the only thing I changed from
the smb.conf.sample file that was included with the distribution was to
change the workgroup name, and to add one share on the samba server box as
follows:
[download]
   comment = Network download directory
   path = /export/download
   writable = yes
   printable = no
   create mask = 0765
