Thanks, I have got samba working now.
I am not sure what was actually wrong, maybe I did something wrong without
realising it. Anyway, I currently use samba-1.9.18p10-3 rpm from RH5.2.

There seems to be something very wrong with the
samba-2.0.3-19990228.i386.rpm I made using the tarball script. When I call
smbclient -L localhost, I get:-

session setup failed: ERRSRV - ERRbadpw (Bad password - name/password pair
in a Tree Connect or Session Setup are invalid.)

and in /var/log/messages :-

May 25 18:39:34 rose PAM_pwdb[6805]: get passwd; pwdb: structure is no
longer valid
