Please Help! Re: Using smbpasswd (fwd)

I am trying to get encrypted passwords working for a Linux/Samba server 
serving Win9x clients. We want the students to be able to logon either 
the Samba file system or the Linux server and allow the students to 
change their password from either. I would really appreciate any help 
on this matter. We need to get this working as quickly as possible as 
the old Netware server is on life support. Thanks!

I am running RH52 Linux upgraded to kernel 2.2.1 and samba-2.0.3-19990228. 
The following is an excerpt from my smb.conf file...

# Global parameters
        workgroup = WORKGROUP
        server string = Samba Server
        update encrypted = Yes
        smb passwd file = /path_to_smbpasswd/smbpasswd
        passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd
        passwd chat = *UNIX\spassword* %o\n *ew\sUNIX\s*password* %n\n *etype* %n\n *successfully*
        passwd chat debug = Yes        password level = 1
        debug level = 3
        unix password sync = Yes

Notice, I haven't turned on encryption yet, because I wanted to ensure 
everything was working first.

I upped the debug level and now have some additional information...

from the log file...

  check_oem_password: incorrect password length (2131323137).

Incorrect password length? I have tried passwords that were succesfull 
using the standard passwd command, yet will fail under smbpasswd.

Boy, this is frustrating!
