Hrm....  I'm not sure about that one then.  My experience is kinda limited,
but I have successfully set up Samba 2.0.3 and have mapped shares to an NT
4.0 Server Box (SP3) without problem.  The fact that you're not in a Domain
doesn't have to be a problem--specifying the workgroup in which the NT box
sits should suffice.  After specifying a username/password pair that your
NT box can authenticate, you *SHOULD* be ready to go.  Beyond that, I don't
think I can offer any additional help.
