Help! Passwd debug - what is this?

When trying to get "unix password sync" to work, I recorded this bit of log 
file: (My user name is tnichols):

..."Your identity is not known?" It found me in the smbpasswd file, and I am 
definately in the unix /etc/passwd. Can anyone advise?

Note: the chat script begins to look for *1):* and is supposed to respond 
with 1\n
