We had the same problem and nobody could connect until samba was
restarted.
Now we are testing Version 2.0.4b where the problem did not occur
anymore. 
>From time to time samba tells users, that their password is invalid.
After reentering the password everything seems to work fine again.
So i recommend to use at least samba-2.0.4b !
