I had that problem too.
I've tried this patch.
It does work, no more errors in restoring tar to pc shares.
However it doesn't solve the speed problem.

A win95 pc, and a linux 2.0.33 with smbclient1.9.8 (patched to restore subdirs)
and a patched smbclient2.0.2.
On the win95 pc there's a share, this share contains a dir with:
MB 4
Files 142
Subdirs 2

Tarring from the pc to the linux box:
1.9.18: 10sec
2.0.2: 10sec

Restoring from the linux box to the pc:
1.9.18: 10sec
2.0.2: 7min 30sec

I used:
smbclient '\\pc\share' -N -Tc filename.tar
smbclient '\\pc\share' -N -Tx filename.tar


Is this a smbclient problem?
