Yes, when ./configure (before make) and all in one line.

I think that you can simply do
smbclient -L your-host-name
smbclient will look for smb.conf where it thinks it should be, and will
complain if it doesn't find it.

I think so.
However, see if "make unistall" work, or do
make -n install
and it shows you what/where it is going to install, so you can delete
all the things you have installed.
