gethostbyname

I was very pleased to discover the nmblookup command this afternoon.

Now, is there any way to configure my machine so that it looks up the ip
address via WINS as a part of the gethostbyname function?

I'd love to be able to say "ping hostname" and have it work whether hostname
was in DNS, WINS, or /etc/hosts.  Any way to do that?
