Perhaps you are using the wrong smb.conf file? Check with testparm
(it doesn't hurt) ;-)
The location of the file depends on the option you compiled samba with.
As far as I remember the default is /usr/local/samba/lib, but many
(including *.rpm makers) prefer /etc...
