2.0.3 on HPUX 11.0, problem that I can't get past

I'm trying to run 2.0.3 on HPUX 11.0, and thus far have not had any luck.

I can run testparm without any error message. I've tested many smb.conf
files, some from the examples directories, others from web sites, and many of my
own creation, but all give the same set of errors. It's because none of
the changes that I make to smb.conf have any impact that I'm starting to
think that this is a Samba2.0.3 vs HPUX 11.0 issue - although it's
entirely possibly (likely?) that I simply need to include some other
config parameter to make this work.

My current smb.conf file looks like:

[global]
   max open files = 100
   debug level = 8
   share modes = yes
   workgroup = WORKGROUP
   log file = /usr/local/samba/var/log.%m
   lock directory = /usr/local/samba/var

[SHIP]
    comment = Aristo shipping system shared files
    path = /SAMBA/ship
    writeable = true
    create mode = 0766

When I log in as root and execute 'smbd -D', two files are created
in the '/usr/local/samba/var' directory. The first is an empty file
called 'smbd.pid'. The other is 'log.smb'. The contents of this
file are:

If I execute 'smbd -D' again, then the following is added to 'log.smb':

Does anyone have any idea what I need to do to get past these errors?
Also, if you've loaded ANY version of Samba on HPUX 11.0, then I'd
certainly appreciate hearing from you (an email with the Samba version
would be great)! This would at least let me know that what I'm trying
to achieve is proven and working for someone else.

Thanks in advance for any help!
