file names in Win Explorer

Open an explorer window. Under the view menu, select 'options...'. Uncheck
the box marked 'hide file extensions for known file types'. Everything will
work as it should. 

This is a 'feature' of windows whereby they are trying to turn file
extensions into something more like the types that the mac had.
Unfortunately, given their legacy, it's kind of impractical and it doesn't
really work too well, in my opinion.
