/etc/lmhosts

I have noticed that if this file exists on my system my samba server does
not function correctly.
It stops responding to all requests from all machine on the network except
for itself!
nmblookup hontas produces a "name failed" response, but smbclient -L works.
No other win95/98 or Unix machine can access it at all.
The same thing happens if i set resolve name order (i forget the proper name
of the var) to host wins bcast lmhosts.
instead of the default lmhosts host wins bcast.
has anyone else noticed behaviour like this?
