How to authenticate for remote SMB shares?

We want to use a Samba box to authenticate users for a share
mounted on a machine running NT Workstation 4.0 SP-4.

I know that the workstation offering the share will need
to set user-level security, with our Samba machine as the
authenticating computer.

However, it seems that in order to offer different access 
to different users based on the exact share that the 
Samba machine would need knowledge of those shares and whether
or not to check it out. Is this right?

If you have any pointers to help me out on how to set up the
NT machine and the Samba computer, please let me know.
