can't print from wfw

Hi. I got a samba 1.9.18p7 and I have a problem printing from wfw3.11
I can print from DOS, and from win95.

I do : net use lpt1: \\server\printer , so I can print from DOS
I install the drivers for the printer in wfw but when I try to
print I get a message that The driver can't talk to the printer.

I'm absolutely clueless. I searched the archives but I've seen
people printing win3.1, so I guess it must be possible.

Have I missed something obvious ?
