Samba Pre/Post exec Problems

I'm using samba 1.9.18p2 on hp/ux 10.20 with clients connections from PC under NT
or Win95.
In the config file smb.conf, i have written the two following lines

   preexec = /bin/echo \"%u connected to %S from %m (%I)\" >> /tmp/log
   postexec = /bin/echo \"%u disconnected from %S from %m (%I)\" >> /tmp/log

but it seems not to works. The /tmp/log file is not generated. I have include
these two lines in the global declaration.

Would you mind helping me ?
