Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am writing to ask how to set up Samba 1.9.18p2 or p3 to resolve names
across a WAN.

The same configuration that works with 1.9.17 and 1.9.16 does *not* work
with 1.9.18.

Briefly, each router seperated LAN has a copy of nmbd. It acts as a WINS
proxy and forwards requests to a central WINS server. Whether or not there
is an LMHOSTS file directing the nmbd to the WINS does not seem to matter.

Here is a copy of /usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf that is fine with 1.9.1[67]
not fine with '18p[23].

[global]
guest account = nobody
max xmit = 16384
wins server = 192.3.1.29
wins proxy=yes
socket options = TCP_NODELAY

This nmbd is seperated by a router from the samba WINS 192.3.1.29 (That
WINS is a samba 1.9.1[67]). A DHCP server instructs clients on this LAN
(containing the nmbd with config above) to

- be Peer-to- Peer nodes
- ask the local samba to resolve NetBUEI names

This samba appears to act as a WINS itself in that there is a file
/usr/local/samba/var/locks/wins.dat containing records like

DEVTST#00 890125101 255.255.255.255 ffa0
SH4#00 890125101 255.255.255.255 ffa0
B_S#00 890125101 255.255.255.255 ffa0
03127#03 890118606 10.0.3.185 20
03064#03 890123630 10.0.4.15 20
03064#00 890123630 10.0.4.15 20

That file is not present with 1.9.18p[23].

Thank you,

Yours sincerely
