Slow root file access

Server: Samba 1.9.18p4 on SunOS 5.4,5.6
Client: Windows NT Workstation 4.00.1381

Running Samba on two Sun machines with identical smb.conf,
users.map, netswitch.conf, and resolv.conf. On each system, the
root file system (/) is shared as "root" per smb.conf. When accessing
the root share on the client (explorer or NET USE), response is
immediate on one machine (SunOS 5.4), but takes over one minute
on other machine (SunOS 5.6). Not only when first selecting it, but
each time the root directory becomes the current directory. Other
shares offer comparable response times.

Anyone have some ideas on where to look to solve this delay issue?

Please reply to me directly.
