1.9.18 on Slackware Linux 2.0.30

I've got a weird problem trying to compile samba-1.9.18 on any of our
Slackware 3.4 Linux 2.0.30 systems. I've never had any problems before
with samba, so this is a bit weird.

When I set up the Makefile etc, and compile it all goes well until ...

linux2:/usr/local/src/linux-i386/samba-1.9.18/source# make
Using CFLAGS
= -O3 -DSYSLOG -DSMBLOGFILE="/usr/local/samba/var/log.smb" -DNMBLOG
FILE="/usr/local/samba/var/log.nmb" -DCONFIGFILE="/usr/local/samba/lib/smb.c
onf"
 -DLMHOSTSFILE="/usr/local/samba/lib/lmhosts" -DWEB_ROOT="/usr/local/samba"
-DLO
CKDIR="/usr/local/samba/var/locks" -DSMBRUN="/usr/local/samba/bin/smbrun" -D
CODE
PAGEDIR="/usr/local/samba/lib/codepages" -DWORKGROUP="WORKGROUP" -DGUEST_ACC
OUNT
="nobody" -DDRIVERFILE="/usr/local/samba/lib/printers.def" -DLINUX -DFAST_SH
ARE_
MODES       -DSMB_PASSWD="/usr/local/samba/bin/smbpasswd" -DSMB_PASSWD_FILE=
"/us
r/local/samba/private/smbpasswd"
Using LIBS =
Compiling smbpass.c
gcc: Internal compiler error: program cc1 got fatal signal 6
make: *** [smbpass.o] Error 1
linux2:/usr/local/src/linux-i386/samba-1.9.18/source#

I don't think this is gcc, as it works fine with everything else .... and
I've tried a couple of machines
(different processor/mem etc, different installation).

It takes a long time (1 min) to finish and give up on this error ....

Has anyone else seen this ? This is a real pain as I need to upgrade our
samba systems on site.

Long live samba !

Rich
