This is a known bug with Samba 1.9.17p1 when using
slow share modes.

Upgrade to 1.9.17p5 (if you want to stay on the older
release) or to 1.9.18p2 for the latest stable release.

Also, if you are running on Solaris or SunOS (as the
'sun' in your email address might suggest) you will
get much better performance with Samba by re-compiling
with FAST_SHARE_MODES (check the Makefile for details).
