smbd cpu-usage on Digital Unix

Hello,
smbd cpu-usage on our DU 3.2C/alpha is considerably higher
then on a SGI/IRIX 6.3. lets say 80% against 0.03% when copying a file
Samba has also always been much slower on our DU. Why ?
I really start thinking that I am doing something wrong
For instance:
On DU I am running NIS + enhanced security and I choose the
OSF1 + enhanced security option in the Makefile. 
We're talking 18.p2 version
Any suggestions ?
