sorry people, i'm backing out of this discussion thread.  this is a 
technical / almost philosophical discussion that i a) don't have enough 
time for  b) need to do lots of explaining of some basic issues.

suggestions to people:  read rfc1001/2.txt.  look up rfcs and issues on
"Dynamic DNS".  take a look at the CIFS digest archives.  look up LDAP.
