ok. a little more on this. i've managed to get one out of two machines to hang consistently, by logging them both out at exactly the same time. this smells of a file sharing/locking and/or file time/date stamp issue, if you ask me. bear in mind that file locking/sharing didn't actually _work_ in 1.9.16. luke
