Simple upgrade problem...?

We just upgraded from 1.9.15p6 to 1.9.17p4 on Linux 1.2.13. We kept the
smb.conf file as is, but smbd seems broken.

Contents of /usr/local/samba/var/log. after smbclient -L casa:

Are there some subtle differences in smb.conf between the versions? 
Running smbd.old -D and nmbd.old -D works fine, as before.

Any suggestions are appreciated...
