Samba + Win95 directory problem

I have just set up Samba 1.9.16p11 on our Linux server here.  It is set
up and running fine, the configuration checks out, and Windows95 is able
to map user directories to drives.  I am able to browse/edit/create
files as well.

However, I have a problem when I try to access directories within the
user directory.  If I try to select a directory, Windows 95 claims that
it doesn't exist, even though it is shown in the listing.  It will allow
me to create directories, but it warns me that I might not be able to 
access the contents of the newly created directory..

I have been unable to fix this problem or find any references to it in
any documentation.  I would greatly appreciate any help on this matter.
